Oliver's Woods Nature Preserve, located along the White River, immerses nature in the middle of a crowded commercial district. The urban nature reserve includes 16 acres of forest, 37 acres of prairie Savannah restoration, and a mile of white river boundaries.

Many volunteers helped us build trails, plant native plants and trees, and remove invasive species from forests. This special care allows native species such as wild ginger, Virginia bluebell, water leaf, wild hyacinth, and trillium to thrive.

The southern half of the popular town run trail park is included within this property. The trail is used by mountain bikers, joggers and pedestrians and remains the same as agreed by Indy Park and original landowner Oliver Doherty.

History of real estate

 

A generous benefactor named Oliver Daugherty, who died in 2009, entrusted the property to CITI.

The restoration and eventual opening gained momentum in 2017 when CITI was named one of the nonprofits supported by the Partners for the White River of the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. Many other donors, including the Glick Family Fund, the Central Indiana Community Foundation, and PK Partners, made this preservation possible and provided thousands of hours of volunteer support for businesses such as Charles Schwab, Eli Lilly, REI, and other local community projects and groups.

Oliver's Woods Nature Preserve is the 15th Nature Preserve for the Central Indiana Land Trust and the second one within the city of Indianapolis. It is located at 8825 River Road, just north of the Fashion Mall. The site is part woods and part prairie restoration with over 1.25 miles of frontage to the White River.
